Domestic Violence affects our Community

  • 1 in 4 are victims of domestic violence.
  • Every 12 seconds a woman is battered
  • 70% of children raised in abusive homes experience physical abuse.
  • Children who witness their mothers being battered are:
    • 6 times more likely to commit suicide
    • 24 times more likely to commit sexual assault
  • Male children who experience domestic violence are 1,000 times more likely to repeat it.
  • Battering often begins or escalates during pregnancy and causes more birth defects thanaccidents and illness combined.
  • Battering is the single major cause of injury & death to women.
  • One-third of all police time is spent responding to DV calls.
